I hate to talk about the Astros when they are playing well because I know suck is right around the corner. Of course we are supposed to feel sorry for them because they got their families and houses blown away by the storm. Well they can afford a new family and a new house and I am here scratching our a living barely getting by with no storm except the economic storm that is screwing us daily. No, I don't feel sorry for the Astros, I feel sorry for the residents of Houston and the Texas coast who are going through this sh*t with no big salary. I hope you folks recover and I hope those Astros start winning again before it is too late, but I won't lose any sleep over it.

I said before the season started that this would be a .500 - .515 team. They are not disappointing me at all as they have lived down to expectations. They have had several nice streaks, but you always knew that they would fall off eventually.
Baseball and all major sports fall to insignificance when going up against the Force of Nature that is a hurricane. But what kind of name is IKE for a hurricane. Hurricanes should have menacing names like Larry, Moe or Curly! ;D

I just wanted to say that post may have sounded excessively bitter. I realized that none of the players lost family members or I would have never said that. But it seems like with all their fans are going through they could manage better efforts than they have been giving lately. Anyway wish all you folks well and hope things get put back together quickly there.

Where is Jbarron to tell us that Cooper sucks again? I need to hear that. Just when we thought they were putting something together the pitchers quit pitching and the hitters quit hitting. And Cooper starts sucking as a manager.

Iowafan, the post you used to start ths thread hit the nail on the head. If I have to hear Brandon Backe whine about Ike one more time, I think I'll puke. The millionaires have used Hurricane Ike as an excuse to go in the tank when they had a chance to win the Wild Card with just a little more hard work and a little less whining and feeling sorry for themselves. If any of their homes were destroyed, they can pay cash up front to replace it. It's the hard-working people that lost their homes that I feel sorry for.........not the milliionaire athletes and the welfare bums who live off the government. We had some evacuees up this way and most of them are pure gutter trash that should have stayed on the coast and let Ike wash them away. They are blights on society.
As for Cooper, it isn't his fault tht these babies decided to use Hurricane Ike as an excuse to choke. Just when he needed to step up, Lance Berkman does the worst disappearing act of his career. He makes me sick pouting and walking around with his chin dragging the ground.

I wanted to make sure you were still out there. It is good to hear from you. Yeah, there was no reason to quit playing at this point. It would seem like there would be more impetus to play better considering the circumstances. I am extremely disappointed in the Astros.

I disagree... No amount of money make a human being immune from the harm that this storm has caused. Yes, perhaps they have more options to repair their particular situation, but losing your home, and the things you've spent your life obtaining, even something as small as the pictures you had on a hard drive or all the food you had going bad and smelling up the whole house, worrying about the safety of family, dealing with power outages and lack of water and gasoline and ice...these are not restricted by race or social status. I pray for ALL who were harmed by this storm whether it be a millionaire baseball player, some poor working stiff living in a trailer, or a homeless drunk living under a bridge. We are all equal in the eyes of the Lord. There are no exceptions to this rule. Gents, I'm going to say this as delicately as I can...Some things are more important than baseball. A lot of Astros, the support staff, even the hot dog vendor at Minute Maid have been affected by this tragedy and to minimize that tragedy by saying that they should have simply taken their lumps and played better ball is about the most callously selfish thing that could be said right now. Please don't reduce yourself to that train of thought. You are all smarter than that and you all have hearts and families and loves and things of your own that I bet you could not possibly imagine living without. Please show yourselves to be the good and caring people that your God expects you to be.

I get paid money to do a job. I get paid a fraction of what the lowest paid baseball player on the team is paid. When I have problems in my life, I am still expected to do my job. I can take a week off at times if the situation is really rough. Baseball players have a schedule which is difficult to alter. They have much of the year off and I do not. Yet I still get paid a fraction of what they are paid. As a fan I think I have the right to not have any pity on their sorry asses. If they lose, as far as I am concerned they deserve no respite from the disappointment of the fans. Of course I am not the type to harass them personally. The internet is the means I use to express my dissatisfaction.

I am with Ken on this one...paid to do ajob...ok, fine, but lets see you do that job as well as always when you are wondering what is going on at the house.
Fact is...divorce, death in the family, etc has a huge effect on ANYBODY....If you dont agree then you either a fool or a liar

Iowa Fan...after rereading these posts, I have to add to my earlier comment.
I agree with the idea that you have to hump up and get the job done regardless of the circumstances, but for cryin out loud!!!!
While you sit in your nice warm, dry house with lights and phones, AND A WORKING TOILET, and water from the tap, and the ability to drive down the street where you live, it is easy to see how detatched you are from what is going on down there.
Backe is from galveston...I dont know if he still lives there, but he has family there...friends...etc. Those folks cant even get into town to see if they have anything left, and you think it isnt reasonable that his performance suffers?
I dont care how much money those folks have, they are hunman, and it does take a toll.
All due respect, but your job can be done by thousands of people...theirs cant...that is why they make lots, and the rest of us little.....if you cant see the difference, then I cant explain it to you.

If any us did our jobs the way Backe has done his this year we would be fired. He sucked BEFORE blew in and he is using it as an excuse to keep on looking like crap. The best thing to do with him is get rid of him.

They get paid more so more should be expected of them. That is a simple enough response. It may sound inhuman but I am about as human as I can be and I do worry about the people from Galveston and Houston. But as far as I worry, I still can't build up sympathy for these baseball players. As far as Backe if he has lots of family and relatives that are suffering, I can see how it might distract him. Even if it were in baseball you don't get many chances. If you can't put it out, the other team will beat you. That is why the fans who paid your salary hired you. The fans paid you to win, not to start pouting when the going gets tough. We expect more of our soldiers that we do of these baseball players. Why should I pity them?

This is just a general observation, but all parties here have a point.
Yes IKE did disrupt many peoples lives, mine included. I just got my power back on Tuesday at 5PM. However, these guys make enough money that their lives may be inconvienenced, but unlike the little guys like me who have to wait for the insurance adjuster to come out and look at my property, they can start getting things back together immediately.
Besides, you did not hear the Texans players whining about how their home opener got rescheduled for October and that they were losing their Bye-week. The simple fact is that the Astros are a bunch of whiners and posers and they always have been and always will be until they get some cajones and some players with an attitude instead of all of these choir boys. (Same goes for the Texans as far as the team attitude goes.)

What the Astros need is some players who actually have a pair of balls to provide leadership. Lance Berkman is a wimp who can't hold up his end of the load. Compare the attitude of this team when Roger Clemens was here and how it's been without him. Clemens may have used steroids, but, he had the attitude of a winner and it rubbed off on the rest of the team. We didn't make a Wrld Series appearance because of the great leadership provided by Bagwell and Biggio. We had those two before Clemens got here and always folded in the playoffs. The closest things we have to leaders are Tejada and Oswalt. In a few years, Hunter Pence could be that type. Berkman simply is too laid back.

I did not write anything because I had a point. I had no point I was just bellyaching. And since bellyaching stirs up more bellyaching people were bellyaching at me. I don't see any point to any of it, it was just bellyaching.
As far as Jbarron and his point about the pair of balls, I am in agreement that if Berkman took steroids, he would probably increase the circumference of his balls, and he might even grow some hair on them while he was at it. But I would rather get Oswalts already ample balls to lead this team. I don't want any artificially grown balls leading the team! Oswalt should take the whole team to dad's goat herd. There is natural steroids in abundance to be found in goat meat!
