Exactly. The main reason I read further into the incident was that I saw you were taking that stance. You'd never be called an apologist, especially not for a guy like Bradley, so to see you give him the benefit of the doubt opened my eyes.

Some of the umpires have a habit of following a player who is walking away from an argument. When the player stops and responds, the ump kicks him out of the game and baits him into being more upset. There are cases where an umpire ejects a player and then follows him as he walks away, trying to incite a further response from the player. If the player gets upset and responds and/or makes contact with the umpire, the player is suspended by the commissioner's office. Why is it that we NEVER see an umpire suspended for actions such as ths crap Mike Winters pulled with Milton Bradley? Winters knew of Bradley's reputation as a hothead and incited this mess himself. Winters should be suspended and nothing should happen to Bradley.

I agree completely and whole-heartedly that we should see a reprimand, suspension or SOME from of punishment handed out to umpires. Their egos have gotten huge and they deserve to be blasted for quite a number of things.
With that being said, I don't know if we ever will see it. Part of the reason for that is that it shows the public their fallability. We all know that trhe blow calls. But they never reverse their calls even when they know they have blown them. That's because it takes away thir authority. It's the 'human' element of the game. That's why we don't have instant replay or coaches challenges.
Personally I would love to hold quite a few them accountable and force them to stand there and be humiliated at times. But it won't happen.

The "replay" I referred to was watching (onmlb.tv archives) the ENTIRE 5th inning when MB was called out on strikes to end the inning, stood there showing up the plate ump. Not seen but later described was MB flipping his bat in the direction of the ump. It was watching the ENTIRE 8th inning where MB singled with 2 outs and IMMEDIATELY got on Winters case about reporting the bat flip when he got to first. You can see Winters step forward and say "Pardon?" to try to catch what MB was saying. It escalated from there. But Winters didn't say A WORD to MB until MB started to give him $hit. A 2 minute bit of eye candy from youtube DOES NOT show what happened. I then listened to the Padres radio announcer Ted Leitner plead and beg MB to shut the hell up and get his mind into the pennant race. He said something along the lines of it being a cold day in hell when MB would ever play in a Padres uniform again. He said quite emphatically that MB did the same thing in LA, the same thing in Oakland and now he's doing the same thing in San Diego. "Just shut up and play ball, Milton"...and then he went down with the ACL ...."Boy, now I've seen everything". THAT from a good, credible announcer who is about as "homer" for "My Padres" as you can get. He did have a few words to say about the newer generation of umps baiting the players, but that was without having a clue about MB castigating Winters for reporting his bat flip.

Crash.. I dont know what you were watching, but even the Padre 1st base coach is going over to the Umpire even before Bradley does with his arms out like he is saying " what the hell" ?? Bradley was for sure running his mouth, but umpires need to let it go. This Ump baited Bradley in this deal. MB is a piece of sh*t, but he was baited by the ump. I never say the 1st base umpire just mouth " pardon" ? He was running his mouth the entire time.

Go to mlb.tv and pull the game up from the archives. The incident starts at 2:26:10 when MB steps to the plate. He pulls into first at 2:26:25 and IMMEDIATELY says $hit to Winters. They continue jawjagging for about 4 minutes and at 2:31:00 MBs career is over.
The mlb HIGHLIGHT replay only lasts 56 seconds. In real time, the incident lasted 4 minutes and 35 seconds. So there is lots you don't see that has been edited out ---like MB giving Winters about a 2 minute lecture before Winters calls him a sorry sack of sh*t to make him edplode.

Baited or not, the stupid f**ker got kicked out. I've run across my share of baiting ref's coaching basketball over the years. You've got to walk the line with some of those guys if you want to stay in the game. MB crossed the ref's line and paid the price.

I have had my fair share of stupid umps when playing softball. During the game I have learned to keep my mouth shut. But I have let them have it after the game.
You are right about keeping your cool to stay in the game. They can't eject you after the game is over.

That's how I roll too, Ike. After the game, you better head to the car quick if you don't want to hear what I have to say.

Not you Coach. I have never known you to get right to the point, You always beat around the bush first. ;D Though sometimes the bush does need to be trimmed! I have noticed that most refs, umps, jackasses, etc. always head to the car real quick when Coach gets after them! ;D

Though sometimes the bush does need to be trimmed! Back in the 70's and early 80's the bushes could use a little trimming. These days the bushes are usually cleared.
