That's the point. Why would you honestly believe that they would have let Beltran go over something like a no trade clause, something they've given before and they've given since?

well, they did not give it to beltran, so management screwed that one.
MANAGEMENT SAID they did not wanted to give that clause because it was asked way too late in negotiations, stupid move by astros.

Beltran isnt as Astros because he chose to play in NY. Same with Kent, Clemens, Pettitte.
Blame them for the trades, but the FA signings arent the AStros fault.
Beltran was never going to sign here. The no trade clause is BS started by BOrass.

Do you really think, given what we've seen the Astros give to other players before and since then, that if Boras had told the Astros from the get-go that they wanted a no trade clause to cover the first 3 years that they would have let that and that alone be the deciding factor in Beltran walking?

I disagree, Beltran wanted to play for the Astros, same with Kent. Pettitte gave FIRST chance to Astros and Clemens just saw how pitiful this team was and left to NY.
Beltran was not going to sign if there was a no trade clause there, good for him. Player want control of his life after you spend 9 years under the CONTROL of a team. IF you are able to become a FA, ask for the clause, is your right and you should go for it. If not, go to another team that will offer it. Management screw that one.
Kent, another mistake. He WAS UNDER CONTRACT, only thing needed was astros TO PICK OPTION. Astros DID NOT PICK OPTION.
Pettitte, he ask for 2 years, astros did not wanted to sign him for 2 years, he left to a team that gave him taht kind of contract.
So is not correct to say those 3 players did not wanted to play for the astros, just the opposite and thats MY POINT, management is SCREWING negotiations with good talent.
Now, Clemens is another story, and i can't fault him, he did the RIGHT THING, he saw how pitiful this organization is by trying to give biggiio his chance of 3,000 hits instead of having the best team on the field. Clemens and Pettitte are WINNERS and they've seen how teams that win do business, and they will NOT carry dead weight like Biggio for individual purposes and left the other players unprotected for a real chance to win games.

I disagree, Beltran wanted to play for the Astros, But you still didn't answer my question. Not a mistake. What in the hell are you talking about? Who said those 3 players did not wanted to play for the Astros? Here's another honest question: did Beltran, in fact, get a no trade clause from the Mets? I can't find a definitive answer.
