I read an article in the Chronicle last night where Wade said our starters are better than folks give them credit for being. It got me to thinking about a couple of things - one was about who gets the innings and the other about where the era projects out to with the staff as it is currently structured.
The good news is that if you take the last three years for the projected top 12 pitchers on the staff and then use the average to determine projected innings and eras then the projected era for the team when rolled up is .28 per game lower than last year.
The bad news is that with these twelve pitchers we only will get about 1354 innings. We need to have 1464 innings covered. Where do the other innings come from as it is in my mind unreasonable to even project either Backe or Sampson for any more than 150 and that is a stretch.
Bottom line is that we have to have another 200+ inning pitcher for this team. Backe and or Sampson will get hurt as the year goes on and there is no one to eat their innings.

I think Ed Wade got hold of some killer bud if he thinks our pitching staff is better than everyone thinks it is.

The guys we have today are better than the guys that we had at the end of the year. We just do not have enough of them.

It is a b*tch to be one solid pitcher and two good utility guys away from being a strong playoff caliber team. A b*tch because I am getting the sense that we are going to be staying that way for a while.

Unless we uipgrade the rotation and get a good hitter to bring off the bench, we may be worse than we were last season. If management is counting on Woody and Wandy to be consistent, they are even dumber than I thought they were.

I thought I would revive this old thread and update it for the addition of Chacon and the deletion of Williams. The net result is that with the current starting day roster we have a projected era of .31 less than last year. That means we will give up 50 less earned runs than last years staff. We project out as scoring 67 more runs than last year so it is a safe bet to say that this is still a team that will win between 83-85 games this year.
With that it confuses the hell out of me why so many "experts" think that this team is one of the 5 worst teams in the league. Time to fly to Vegas and win some easy money betting the over under for wins.

The Astros rotation promises to be the worst in team history.

1975 was pretty weak. Dierker - the ace was spent. JR was young and wild. Dave Roberts did a great Woody impression. Griffin's arm was shot and Konieczny was a perennial hope like Wandy.
