since this board has been dead anyway.....I would like someones opinion besides what I remember...Since Hembo was asking about outfield arms, I would like to know who you thought had the stronger arm at 3rd...Radar or Camminitti?...both had guns
Cammy was the stronger hitter, although rader had some awesome power(witness that rooster in the gold seats), but defensively, Rader was way ahead in my book. Doug was as quick as anyone, but I even think he had a stronger arm(hell...if thats possible)...what did you think?
I once saw rader dive and knock down a screamer down the line and sitting flat on his butt in the 3rd base coaches box throw a rope to get the astonished runner...best play I ever saw.

I certainly rate Rader over Caminiti as a 3rd baseman. As to who had the stronger arm? Difficult to determine since both had cannons but when guaging the arm strength of two third basemen who had exceptional throwing arms, it kind of becomes moot point.
Doug Rader was clearly superior to Caminiti in both range and quickness plus Rader was also better with the glove. This is no slap at Caminiti as a 3rd baseman. Ken would clearly be a huge improvement at 3rd over anyone the Astros could put at the "hot corner" today.
In my mind there was Apromonte, Rader and Caminiti in no certain order and the rest of the lot who played 3rd base over the years for the Astros are a distant 4th.

I also don't think Rader was a coke head.

Rader was really good with the glove. The only knock on him was he was inconsistent at the plate. I'd also take Roger Metzger over a lot of the guys the Astros have had play shortstop over the years. He wasn't great at the plate but his defense was very good.

I also don't think Rader was a coke head. ;D Rader was definitely not a coke head but a head case for sure in the sense that Doug didnot fit neatly into any mold. He acted a little on the crazy side at times but that was mostly on purpose just to get a rise out of his teammates. The nickname "Red Rooster" fit his personality. Another point on Caminiti....he would be a huge upgrade at 3rd base defensively on this current roster too.

What is it with Astros third baseman going to the Padres? Rader, Caminiti, Ensberg
Then you have Jason Lane... I see a trend here.

They are with the Yankees. Last I heard, Ensberg had finally figured out his swing (again). That dude is more confused that Elton John in regards to how he should swing.

I think Rader was the best defensive 3B we ever had. I think Cammy had just a little better arm, but like James said, it's just splitting hairs. In 1971 we started Cedeno in RF, Morgan at 2B, Metzger at SS, Rader at 3B, Edwards at C -they all won Gold Gloves in their careers. And we had a pretty fair glove in CF with Wynn and a converted SS at 1B with Menke. That's FIVE GGs out of 8 position players and Wynn could have had one too. That is tight D.

Have you guys forgotten that Charlie Hayes played a little third base for the Astros?

Last I heard, Ensberg and Lane were with the Yankees. Yes, he is. I followed his progress through spring training. Him and Lane both, actually. Lane was eventually optioned. But, he played the last half of 07' as a Padre.
