The bottom of the second inning was a perfect example of how stats donot ever tell the complete story......the run scored by the Cubs is charged to Backe as earned even though it was the result of sloppy play by Blum and Perez. Blum is at double-play depth and still couldn't get the runner out at second on a tailer-made double play ball hit right to him. And, even though Blum was slow getting the ball to second base, Perez was still late getting to the bag therefore the play is scored "fielder's choice" and thus the run becomes earned. No errors charged on the play although their were a lot of mental errors and bad fundementals along with infielders with relatively weak throwing arms and slow fielding ability.

The problem is runner was running, Blum should had throw to first instead, very dumb play by him, now we see why he is a UTILITY.'

We can look back to that second inning as the one that made the difference in this game. Mental mistake in the second inning by a utility infielder cost the Astros this game. You can't always expect or hope to win games with towering home runs. That is why good defense is so important...especially in games like this one in which the pitchers have shut down the offense.
