In a game at Chicago the other day, Chris Young hit D. Lee (sorry, I don't know how to spell Derek?, Derreck?, Derrick? Derik?Derrique). Scoreless game. Bottom of the 4th, I believe. It was a 1-2 or a 2-2 count where Young had gone soft away and came up high and hard. The Padres were miffed at Soriano moonwalking a homerun the day before -- violating one of those "unwritten rules of baseball". Words were said implying the next batter should get one in the ribs to teach the Cubs to educate Soriano to these rules.
Anywat, D Lee naturally feels obligated to swing at Chris Young after Young said something along the lines of "Just take your damned base". Young swung back to protect himself. Neither player connected.
My question is, why was Young ejected? It reminds me of when Dave Winfield attacked Nolan Ryan. I don't recall that Ryan was ejected. Are pitchers supposed to tuck tail and run for centerfield? No way this was intentional on the part of Young.

its automatic ejection for both involved..baseball has cracked down quite a bit...in all fairness i dont think he was trying to hit him. he should have burried one in sorianos ribs but the one to Dlee wasnt intentional... my question is why are the cubs always involved in this kind of sh*t...its not a recent development either

If I remember correctly, Ryan was NOT ejected from that game. Ventura charged him and Nolan put him in a headlock and beat knots on his head.

That's right, he stayed in the game (and didn't allow any more hits, either).

mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070618&content_id=2034377&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlbThey both got 5 game suspensions. I guess a player is not allow to defend himself. I can just see it. Oswalt hits Barrett. Barrett charges the mound and Roy takes off for the CF Flagpole on Tal's Hill with Barrett chasing Roy around and around the flagpole. The bullpen mounts a counter-charge, led by Stretch Suba in the role of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, sweeping down Tal's Hill in a wheel as if it were Little Round Top to rout the assaulting Cubbies and save the day.

My favorite was Prior hitting bonds..bonds started walking toward the mound but stopped when he realized prior was starting toward him with the 'come on gesture' i think prior is one of the last guys i would charge
