That is correct, but he is a good player. They aren't easy to come by. Also it helps holding onto something that makes the Astros recognizable as the Astros. It might hurt your fan base to get rid of someone that is hopefully as popular as a player like Berkman should be. It wouldn't hurt me as a fan. What is hurting me is that we have a team that appears incapable or winning like Vega says for five or six years. The quicker we make a complete overhaul the better are chances are that it will be a shorter period. Of course if Drayton suddenly decides to spend much money I suppose anything is possible in baseball. But is money helping the Yankees these days? I guess it doesn't hurt because they are a far cry better than we are.

Trade Berkman? What a novel idea. The ASStros management is in serious denial if they really believe that this team is not in a rebuilding scenario. We could trade Berkman for just about anyone.(pitching anyone?) Look at what the Brew Crew pulled off! They now have C.C. Sabathia! Whether or not they can keep him come the off season is questionable, but McLame needs to make a push to get some pitching in here or it is going to be a long decade! ;D

It really is tough to say what direction this team needs to head in. We have stars but no supporting staff. The minor league system is still a mess and it appears as if we may of missed on our draft yet again. So if we trade our stars we get back other folks prospects but given our apparent lack of talent in evaluating talent that is a crap shoot as well.
So it seems to me like we are in a position where we are going no where for the next few years anyway. Drayton will not pass out the big bucks for the big stars and we can not judge talent.
Hard to take but what the hell I have lasted 46 years as a fan I guess a few more won't hurt.

Iowa fan...you are singing my song, but I believe that if drayton can put as many butts in the seats as he has the last 2 years with the teams we have had thAT Astro fans will go watch anything. We apparantly dont need a star nor identity.
If we pick our spots...teams get desperate at the trading deadline....Believe me....some fool general manager would give us a ton for Roy O and Berkman.
Lets face it...we will finish last with em....we can finish last without em

Now we are getting a little more imagination from Cooper. I still don't like what he does with Pence. Pence shouldn't be leading off. That is just stupid, the guy never walks, he is a hitter. Hitters get rbi's therefore should be further down in the lineup. Put Bourn, Matsui, or Wiggenton there.

The Astros need to make trades to restock the minors. They also need to make an effort this year to sign their draft picks, unlike last year when PooPoora got spanked and sent home with nothing!

Last year McLane, not Purpura, made the decision to listen to the suggestions that came from the front offices of MLB about offering the draft picks a 'slot' value, and refused to go above that.

The city of Houston should fire McClane. You should never listen to MLB. McClane is incompetant. Why would you listen to MLB when other teams aren't going to listen? He is an incompetant imbecile.

The GM's job is to explain to a numb nut like McLane why they need to offer players a certain amount and why they think the guy deserves it. Pupura never did that, from all accounts, he just said "Duh, OK Tennessee!" Other GM's are pretty much given the leeway to do their jobs except for clubs like the Yankees, Orioles, Royals, etc.
I understand the owners wanting to be involved but McLane wants to be involved to the last penny. He needs to leave the baseball operations to baseball people and he should worry about how to get his groceries to the store before they go bad!

Actually, everything I've read said that Purpura did try to get these kids signed and McLane wouldn't budge over the recommended slot pricing for the picks.

Chandler is right. Drayton's penny-pinching is the reason our farm system is in shambles because he won't come up with the money to sign draft choices. He'd rather waste it on crap like Shawn Chacon, Jason Jennings, and Woody Williams.

I never said anything about him penny pinching. His fault was in listening to what his buddy Selig told him to offer those players.

I said he was penny-pinching and he is..........just like he has always done. He no longer has Hunsicker as GM because he's an idiot and kept meddling in all personnel decisions.
