Who was the first player ever selected to an All Star team as a write in candidate by the fans? What year?
After being selected he was quoted as saying: "Thanks to the fans for making this possible, and thanks to Gillette for making this all necessary".

Just to throw in a bit more information: Ricardo Adolfo Jacobo Carty (born September 1, 1939 San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic) was a utility player with a 15 year career from 1963-1967, 1969-1970, 1972-1979. He played for the Milwaukee Braves, Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs of the National League and the Oakland A's, Cleveland Indians and Toronto Blue Jays of the American League. He played catcher, first base, third base, outfield and designated hitter.
He was elected to the National League All-Star team in 1970.
He won the National League batting title in 1970 hitting .366.
