I remember at the beginning of the year how happy you were about jennings and i told you, be careful because his fastball was only 83 mph and he was going to get HIT HARD.
Of course, you disagree and accuse me of being negative.
Well, good to see you FINALLY SAW the light on this one.
I am on the record saying i would not trade hirsh for him, so trading 3 guys for Jennings was CRAZY.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. It makes alot of people feel like they are experts.
It was a bad trade.

Next Year is worrisome, to be sure. It's looking like Wandy is your No. 2 starter. If Backe makes a comebacke from the Tommy John then he can contribute... Career 19-14, 4.71 ERA. Then there's Woody, who has pitched better of late.
For free agents... here's the class
Curt Schilling (41) Jason Jennings (29) Koji Uehara (33) Freddy Garcia (32) Kenny Rogers (43) Jon Lieber (38) Bartolo Colon (35) Joe Kennedy (29) Tomo Ohka (32) John Thomson (34) Kip Wells (31) Wade Miller (31) Livan Hernandez (33)* Randy Wolf (31) - $9MM club option for '08 Paul Byrd (37) - $8MM club option for '08 Jeff Weaver (31) Tom Glavine (42) - $9MM player option for '08 Kris Benson (33) - $7.5MM club option for '08 Jaret Wright (32) David Wells (45) Eric Milton (32) Kyle Lohse (29) Matt Clement (33) Rodrigo Lopez (32) Josh Fogg (31) Byung-Hyun Kim (29) Odalis Perez (31) - $9MM club option for '08 Brett Tomko (35) - $4.5MM mutual option for '08
Of the ones I'm familiar with, nobody on there really lights my fire unless the price was absolutely right. I like Bartolo Colon - historically he eats up a lot of innings -- but he's been hurt this year and at age 35 I wouldn't be willing to give him the length of contract he would probably want.

I made the statement WHEN the trade was made.
Actually, many people said Hirsh was better than Jennings considering the contracts.
Sorry, but probably YOU were few that agreed on that trade since day one.

I'm surprised we didn't sign David Wells except for the fact that he might beat Berkman to the post-game buffet table.

I like both Guiterrez and Patton, but I would like to have Patton break in to Houston in September in non pressure situations out of the pen, no more than two innings no matter the situation. Then come the Spring he can fight for the number 5 spot in the rotation. The Astros need to manage their pitching prospects better, have them break the rotation slowly for every Roy O you have Tim Redding, Kirk Saarloos, and to a lesser extent Scott Elarton. All three had the ability but handeled wrong.

It looks like Tim Redding may be a free agent this offseason. He sure kicked our butts last night. (I didn't actually say that, did I?)

lamearmjr, good to have you here.
I think Patton could pitch now in the majors because team is out and he can gain experience for next year.

Anybody remember where Johann Santana started out......Astros organization. I would also like to see Patton called up in September.

That greatest GM in baseball history and former Astros GM Gerry Huniscker was running the show when Santana was allowed to be scooped up in the rule 5 draft.
But man.. wasnt Gerry great? He never made any mistakes.

I take hun over purp ANY DAY.
Right now the 3 players given for Jennings are doing much much better.
I believe Buchholz whip is even lower than Oswalt.

The rotation will be full of has beens and hopefulls and Roy Oswalt. What ever happend to that great farm system we had at one time. Now we cant even sign our top picks. Does it seem like Drayton is milking the WS appearance for all its worth then put the team up for sale, or is it my wishful thinking. It would be nice if we could have a Mark Cuban type buy the team, open the wallet to all aspects of the game and get back to the series.

Drayton has pulled a con job on the fans.........well, a lot of them. He got lucky when Andy Pettitte gave him a "home-town discount" and signed with the Astros and this also brought Roger Clemens on board giving this franchise an identity and leadership that was sorely lacking then and is even worse now. Biggio and Bagwell were never leaders.........they just stayed around a long time. Clemens helped lead them to the World Series, and, then made Drayton pay for the cheap labor he got from Roger during his first year here. During this past off-season, Drayton allowed Pettitte to go back to NY and he knew he was putting an end to any chance he had of keeping Clemens. In fact, I think he figured he had milked those two for every dime he needed to get out of them, so he let them go. They had packed the stadium, sold tons of merchandise, and puts a lot of $$$$$$$ in old Draytie's pocket so now he was ready to cut ties with them and go the cheap route.
In 2005, when we went to the WS with Clemens, Pettitte, and Oswalt leading the way, we also had great seasons from Morgan Ensberg and Jason Lane. Morgan hit about 35 homers and Lane hit 27 or 28. NEITHER has done anything since and became embarrassments to the team. We were lucky to get those seasons from them because neither will ever come close to those numbers again. Ensberg was dumped to San Diego and Lane needs to be given to anyone who wants him. Drayton will NOT open his wallet and sign quality pitching and Purpura has proven to be incompetent when it comes to making trades. Whether AB likes it or not, this team began going downhill when Hunsicker left because he knew that Drayton was about to let this team go to hell because he won't spend the money. In other words, mediocrity was on the way and Hunsicker wanted no part of it.

He got lucky when Andy Pettitte gave him a "home-town discount" and signed with the Astros That $17.5 million he got in 2006 was a home town discount? How would you know if they were leaders or not? Everyone that's ever been attached to the team has said otherwise. So when he signed Clemens, Pettitte, and Oswalt to deals, those don't count? When he signed off on a payroll over $100M last year and not far from that this year, that doesn't count either? When the team is consistently in the top 10 of payroll (top 3 last year), the whole 'Drayton is cheap' line kinda loses its truthiness.
