After Brad Lidge choked away another lead and victory against the Cardinals, interim manager Cecil Cooper had this to say about Lidge after the loss:
"To me, he's our closer and will be our closer," Cooper said of Lidge. "I think his stuff is still good. I have no doubt that he'll run out there and he'll be the guy. He'll be the guy that he was in '04 and '05, and he'll be good. "
This comment by Cooper finally convinced me why he should NOT be the Astros manager next season. This guy suffers from the same tunnel vision as Phil Garner.
If Cooper is too stupid or too frozen in the same mental time warp as Phil Garner to see that Brad Lidge is through as a major league closer, then it's pretty obvious that Cooper does not have the mental makeup to be a big league manager. The Astros donot need another Phil Garner wannabe for 162 games next season. Cooper has also certainly shown a penchant for being completely stone cold dumb on handling young, inexperienced, talented pitchers who have been brought up from the minors.
But, his verbal regurgitation of the same b*llsh*t we heard from Phil Garner all season convinced me.

Lidge needs to be traded, but, we should expect Cooper to have the interim tagged removed before Sunday.

James, you have been watching this game long enough to know that a good manager isnt going to throw Lidge or any player under the bus. Expecially if they have any hope of trading him and getting anything for him. Would it make you feel better if Cooper came out and said Lidge sucked?

But, also the bigger picture is how he so nonchalantly nearly ruined the best top starting pitching prospect the Astros have by nearly ruining his arm by pushing him into an unfamiliar late inning inning relief stint when he was not properly warmed up. The guy obviously doesn't really care how much damage he does to the future of this team while he sits in the dugout chewing the fat and having a good time with Cheo. The guy is a dumb a$$ when it comes to handling pitchers and especially young pitchers. He should have been fired too when Garner was let go.

James, i agree 100 percent about your statement on Patton. Also, Patton was OVERWORKED in the minors this year.
Now, about Lidge, the guy is having a bad year as a closer, but i think part of it is he has a bad knee and for whatever reason they keep using him instead of resting him, STUPID.

Who was the guy who raised hell when the Astros didn't hire Tony Pena as manager? This pepper belly ran out on the Royals after they gave him his first chance to manage.

Anyone who thinks McLane will fire his black manager without giving him a full season is out of their mind. Draytie knows the race card abusers will be lining up on his door step.

No way will he fire Cecil. After all the sh*t the Astros have received because they don't have that many black african-americans on the team, it would be a public relations nightmare.

Cooper will be the manager and I'm not so sure that we have a better option. I'd like to see us get a quality hitting coach and let Sean Berry either hit the road or work in the minors. I would think that Jose Cruz will remain on the staff. I'm not sure about the others. Cooper has already indicated he'd like to have a guy like Davey Lopes on the staff to coach baserunning. It's obvious someone needs to coach it because the baserunning of this team is atrocious........isn't that right, Lance Berkman and Carlos Lee??

You can bet that Jose de jesus Ortiz is locked and loaded with his race card in case Cooper doesn't get signed as the Astros full time skipper.

And, even if Lidge is not hurt there's no sense in throwing him out there and hoping he has a good game so the Astros will have some kind of trade ammo for Lidge. Every scout in the league already knows about Lidge. Your also 110% correct on Patton. They should have sent him home after the Minor League season was over. Instead, Cooper brings him in to pitch in a completely unfamiliar situation - a starting pitcher coming in to relieve in the 8th inning - and he was not completely warmed up and made his arm even worse. I just hope Cooper didn't ruin this young pitchers career with that bonehead move.

Its up to the stros but i still say he is damaged goods....how many more cant lose games will he blow...when is it enough? really, when? 10 blown saves? do they have 10 games to lose next year? Other teams buy guys or their minor leaguers are starting to heat up..can this team really afford a closer who may or may not get it done? hey, guys blow saves..what can you do...But to what extent and his always seem to come at the wrong times...
