Umpire Mike Winters was suspended for the rest of the season by Major League Baseball for his part in the Milton Bradley incident. Witnesses concurred that Winters called Bradley a "f**king piece of sh*t" I applaud the fact that.......for once......the umpire was caught and has been suspended. sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3037237

He shouldn't have uttered it but Winter's pretty much hit the nail on the head.

Hopefully this will send a message to umps that baiting players and managers will not be tolerated. Many times a player pops off in the heat of battle and the ump can't seem to restrain himself from going after the player when the player is obviously trying to disengage and calm down. Who was the ump who tried to bait Wandy after he simply slumped his shoulders after an apparent blown ball/strike call? By rights, that should have warranted a reprimand. Who knows, maybe the ump got one behind closed doors. Significantly, Winter's punishment was made public, which is rare indeed.
Also, this shows that my version of events was correct. It was MB who started the conversation at 1st base about the bat-flip. It is doubtful Winters would have brought the subject up, but once MB did, he had him square in his sites. I also have to wonder if the race card came into play here. MLB is going through great pains to attract African American interest. The alarming thing is that a high percentage of black players seem to display homicidal rage on the field when their sensibilities are offended - most notably Sheffield and MB. That ghetto 'tude has got to go and I wonder if the "blow-back" from the Winters suspension will only embolden it.

msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7260428Here's an interesting angle: Quote:Bradley says Winters accused him of throwing a bat earlier in the game. But that seems to have been just a flashpoint. There's talk that the umpires have it in for San Diego — who saw David Wells suspended for seven games earlier in the season — because Padres CEO Sandy Alderson, who served as their supervisor when he worked for the commissioner, was a tough boss. There is also talk that the umpires have gotten a little out of control. Just hours before the Bradley-Winters mess, after the Brewers lost to Atlanta, Milwaukee manager Ned Yost blasted the umpires: "There's got to be some accountability," he told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "You've got kids out there busting their butt and playing their hearts out and you get that kind of effort? It's a joke. That just re-affirms my suspicion that the fix was in for the '86 NLCS vs the Mets. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind now.

I think by in large these guys are close to perfection on plays ..The home plate game calling has always been a little shaky but when ball is in play they miss next to nothing..I dont know how many times im screaming at the tv only to see the replay and i was wrong....They're by far and away the best officials in pro sports..They will blow a few for sure, but if you watch them(and MLB does) they are outstanding....
having said that i know these guys have a long memory..When they are behind the plate is when the payback starts...Guys like bradley, kent, berkman never get the benefit of the doubt because they have been in umps faces or b*tched one too many times.. i have seen berkman called out on a third strike many times he probably couldnt have reached with a fungo bat
On a pitch down the middle of the plate ive seen umps let biggio slide..why? because in all his days i dont ever remember him getting kicked out or getting in someones face look where he will be in a few years.....

I agree. It's just easier to remember the few foulups then the majority of plays made right.

Since Winters has been suspended, it's also time to get rid of some of the WORST umpires major league baseball has ever seen.......CB Buckner, Ed Rapuano, Doug Eddings, and Chuck Meriwether. I'm sure I forgot some but this is a good start.
