Really, what was management thinking when they did not break Spring Training with Pence on the roster? They have what, THREE players hitting over .250? They could not have envisioned that Pence would have been one of the better offensive players on the team? Everyone around the league is talking about how the ball "sounds different" when it comes off his bat. Was nobody in management LISTENING to that sound?? Guys like Pence come along about once every 15 years. The last time an Astro infused this much excitement was Cesar Cedeno 35 years ago.
If we had broken ST and seen fit to make a line-up that had Pence in CF we could very likely have a ROY, All-Star and MVP candidate on our hands. We very likely could have gelled offensively ---- at least enough to be within a 3 game hunt in a very mediocre division. If Pence does not get ROY this year, the blame can be place directly at the feet of Craig Biggio because this team SHOULD have started the year with Burke leading off at 2B and Pence in CF with Biggio getting enough spot starts to get his GD 3K.

You've got to be pushing 30 years old before you get a shot on this team.

I also wondered why Pence was not on the opening day roster. What else did he have to do besides what he did in Spring Training? When these hard-headed morons who run the team decide on something and see they are WRONG, it takes them too long to change the situation. They seem to be incapable of admitting mistakes and moving on. It's a mistake to allow Biggio and his try for 3,000 hit stand in the way of winning, but, it gets Draytie publicity and makes him money and that's what it's all about........making money.

You've got to be pushing 30 years old before you get a shot on this team. As I recall, every single year of Bagwell's career, the Atlanta Braves won the NL East. They fall off last year, only to re-tool and be in the thick of the hunt again this year. The Braves have had no qualms whatsoever running untested rookies out there without 4 or 5 years of AA, AAA seasoning. I think it was barzilla on Speedy's board who pointed out that Pence's minor league stats were better than Pujol's ----said others: "oh, no Crash, Pujols is the very definition of out-lier - such a player will never come along again" .....yadayadayada ...."sample size"......yadayadayada. The problem with baseball statistics and sample size is that even with a 20 year career such as Biggio's, the "sample size" is STILL too small to be statistically significant. The stats you are most concerned with are the player's BEST FIVE CONSECUTIVE YEARS. Five years of stats are still too small a sample size, and by the time you've got them, they are GONE....DONE...FINISHED --- you are dealing with a different ballplayer (see Berkboy, Lance). No, what you have to do is listen for the sound of a ball coming off a guy's bat or out of his hand -- and when you hear that special sound that rarely comes around, you do your damnedest to build a team around those guys. Even if you have to jettison that great .180 hitting left-handed "contact" pinchhitter or that great .180 hitting "prospect" that's been hanging around for the past 5 years. The Spring Training decision on Pence was indefensible and inexcusable. Heads should roll and testicles be hoisted.

OOhh.. I see. So you dont judge a player by his stats you judge him by the sound the ball makes coming off his bat.
Crash... you doing ok this morning?

Ya know, this ain't the first time lately that you've taken a little potshot at me. Last time *I* mentioned you was to defend you against Hembo. Pretty sad that I take up for you, but you take every chance you can to attack me. But, I'm bored now, so I'll play your silly little game. Blow us all away: what 'useless stats' have I used to judge a player?

Chandler, that was no attack. Just an opinion. Sorry you are so thin-skinned.

OOhh.. I see. So you dont judge a player by his stats you judge him by the sound the ball makes coming off his bat. Crash... you doing ok this morning? You're right, AB. The Astros should have looked at his stats and kept JR in the minors until he was 30. Same with Pence. I'm sure he could have used another 3 or 4 years of seasoning in Round Rock --- at least until he showed he could handle high tea at Four Seasons/Austin. Same with Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays - they should have been sent home the first time they were caught boo-hooing in their hotel rooms convinced they should quit. You build teams around talent, the frickin' stats will take care of themselves. I've got to think that someone's perverse interpretation of stats is what keeps OP on the roster, even if it meant we'd have to break ST without Pence on the roster.

I think they Astros are just waiting for OP to get a ball out of the infield before they release him. They want to let him go out on a high note. Mighty white of them if I must say.

Well, it wouldn't have made any sense to break ST with Pence on the roster IF you weren't going to give him a starting job. Bringing him up to sit the bench wouldn't have helped him at all.
