Nahhhhhh, in 2006 he posted good numbers, and in the second half and playoffs in 2005 he did very good with the Astros, but, Astros wanted to give 3,000 hits to Biggio over a younger guy that was doing better. Thats the trught. ok so you consider the numbers in 2006 to be good. Well, I agree that they were adequate but I was referring to his wonderful career numbers. He batted .276 in 2006 but his career is .248. He must have REALLY stunk the rest of his chances to bring his average down that far. Just because Biggio was here does mean that Burke was kept from playing more. It was his overall performance that had more to do with him not playing than Biggio. Besides, I really don't have a problem with letting Biggio get his 3000 hit. Hell only 27 people have done it so to me that is a good move and tribute to a great and LOYAL player. Why is it that its always someone elses fault Burke never got to play? Anyways, I do not mean to derail the thread, I agree with your take of the bullpen

Chandler, where are you finding that Valverde can't be a free agent until after 09? Everything I can find says his deal expires this year.

Here, here, here, or here, among others. He was first eligible for arbitration after 2006. Players don't reach arbitration status until they have 3 years of service time, unless they qualify as a Super Two. Anywho, it follows that if he had 3 years of service time accrued after 2006, and a player can't be a free agent until after 6 years, that would mean after the 2009 season. His 'deal' is expired right now, but he is under club control for two more seasons. He can't walk unless the team non-tenders him (ala Adam Everett).

Judging from the shape the starting rotation is in, maybe Wade could persuade Wade Miller or Jose Lima to sign with the Astros.

Hey Vega you sure your not BerkyBoy, the way he cried over losing his best friend like your crying over losing Burke. Its a business for some reason the Astros never like Burke including the new GM, so I guess anything to do with TPURP has now been purged from the team

Well, like i said, Burke had a good second half in 2005, very good post season, good 2006 and a bad 2007.
Difference? In 2007 he struggled, Astros sent him to the minors, Red Sox, Pedroia was struggling big time, they stuck with him and he delievered, Colorado, Taveras struggled big time, they stuck with him and he delivered.
So, sorry, but Astros made a mistake there.

We also need to remember that the Astros were also the team that let Johann Santana go in the Rule 5 draft and protected Derek Bell and Richard Hidalgo and let Bobby Abreu go in the expansion draft.
