Lets see the trade: Hirsh, 1.34 whip Buchholz, 1.34 whip Taveras, .360 OBP (very good, usually was at .333 with us) Jennings, 1.52 whip, OUCH. How good are HIrsh and Buch? ? Well, Oswalt has a 1.33 whip. Like i said from day one, i would had not traded Hirsh for Jennings, MUCH LESS THOSE 3 FOR THAT PITCHER.

I love Roy but I had to go with Peavy as my top pick. It won't be long before I'm ready to put Webb on the top o' that list.

One thing is certain, I would like to be in a position to make that choice. I think Peavy though is having the most impressive season. His era away from Petco is amazing.
If I have one game to win though to win a championship I would take Oswalt. Overall though building a team around you have to take Peavy as he is the youngest and should give you more service over time.

If you have one game to win a championship, you better go with backe....he was our only stellar pitcher in the playoffs 2 years running

True but he is laid up on the dl now and no telling if he comes back like the old Backe.

the point I was making is that Oswalt hasnt been that good in the high stakes games....therefore, I dont think I would go with him " if I had to win a game"

Yea.. just ignore that 3.66 ERA in the postseason. The 4-0 record in the postseason.. OR the 2-0 record with a 1.29 ERA in the NLCS.
I dont know which high stakes games you meant. Please be more detailed if you dont mind.

I will say that Backe steps up his game in the playoffs but he still makes me nervous as hell. He also usually goes against the other teams weak sister. I still like Oswalt best in the clutch.

It would have been nice to have had Backe in the rotation instead of Jennings.

I was thinking about the world series...I was thinking aboiut the year before in the NCLS playoffs...and yes...sad as it is...a 3.66 ERA is not that bad...but ib the playoffs, it is strictly common....teams win the big ones because their pitchers shut down the opposition...had Oswalt pitched as well as backe( or had clements or pettite for that matter, maybe we would have done much better.

and...a 1.29 ERA is exactly what I expect of my stopper when it counts...if that isa his record, then good for him....what was it in the Series?

This will turn out to be one of those trades that goes down in history with the Morgan, Cuellar, Staub trades. Purpura may turn out to be the 2007 version of Spec Richardson. Jennings was damaged goods when Purpura traded for him but even if he were healthy, I would not have traded away the future of the team for an -at best - a #3 pitcher even when Jennings was pitching well! I'm curious about what kind of damage control P. R. BS they will put out there when Jennings leaves because McLane is not about to spend millions on this guy to keep him.
