McLane intentionally altered proper winning strategy by not putting his best line-up on the field so he could fatten his wallet shilling tickets for Biggio's pursuit of 3k. Pete Rose bet on and FOR his team which MIGHT have caused him to alter his strategy - which strategy MIGHT not have been in his team's long-term best interests. It will take this team at least half a decade to recover from McLane's folly. |

You have an argument for 06 & 07, but benching a productive player for a non-productive one would be a weird move in the middle of a pennant race. Burke recieved pretty regular time in 05 in LF anyway.

You've got issues. Playing Biggio over Burke will take at least 5 years to recover from?? Deal in hyperbola much? It wasn't simply a matter of Biggio over Burke straight up. It caused Pence not to break ST with the club and it put Burke in CF instead where he was way out of position. It caused Biggio to be put in the lead off spot which was a disaster. The lineup was completely out of sync the entire year because of the accomodations made for Biggio. We are going to have to start from scratch next year. The bench was an ill-defined mess. Who is the second beman next year? Who is utility? Are we going to have a black hole of Burke/Everett/C/P agin next year. Some of those questions could have and should have been answered this year. |
