Well he turned down a 5 million I year deal with 1 million per advancement into incentive bonus making it a worth up to 8 million. I still say it was a slap in face and they wanted him to turn it down as they really didn't want him as manager any more.

Torre should have told George Steinbrenner to go to hell a long time ago.

I agree. Instead of sitting around waiting for Georgie to decide his fate, he should have walked out.

Torre is an ASS.
The SECOND best paid manager in the majors has a 3.5 million contract meaning, Torre was going to STILL be the BEST paid manager in baseball.

I can see both sides of this argument...From Torres standpoint he would have still been the highest paid(by a lot) and with the bonus's, it could have been even more...Plus, at the end of the day he has a dream job in that particular sport. he has been fortunate enough to have coached some of the best teams ever assembled..Other coachs can only dream of making what he did while having that kind of payroll....Torre was great but he has also been a failure...he should have taken the deal
From the yankees standpoint is it unreasonable to think a coach with a 200 million payroll would make a better showing? Maybe getting beat a few seasons is one thing but 2 years in a row they have failed to beat a team not as good..and havent been as far along in the playoffs as a 200 mil team should be...Steinbrenner has always had unreasonable expectations but a lot of it is talk to...Torre did this to himself

btw..despite being a little unreasonable i think steinbrenner has done all that could be asked to bring his city a winner.... its his investment why wouldnt he expect results?
what if you gave a money manager 1 mil and said get to it..would you be cool with losing half by years end ? Then the following year get 20k back? you're still out quite a bit of money, no? what do you have to show for it?

This really burns my a$$ now that i think about it
So maybe rather than fire, he decided to try to spin. The $5 million base salary they offered was a $2.5 million pay cut but still made Torre "the highest paid manager in Major League Baseball," team president Randy Levine pointed out. And if incentives were reached he could "make even more money than (his last deal)," Levine claimed, before adding that the performance base clauses were "what many people in the world" deal with. Torre would have gotten $1 million if the Yankees made the playoffs, $1 million if they reached the ALCS and $1 million if they reached the World Series.
wtf? if he is so confident why didnt he take the deal? pride i guess...

Highest paid manager and did not take the yankees to the WS in last 7 years, imagine, EVEN the ASStros made it to the WS in that span.
Torre is a cry baby.

Vega, I think you've got it all wrong. Steinbrenner is the cry baby. Torre showed himself to be a man of principles and told George to stick his pay cut and his job up his ass.

paycut? ??/ He was going to get same amount, 8 millions IF he achieved INCENTIVES, meaning, i am paying you for RESULTS. Pity that we don't see THOSE kind of contracts MORE OFTEN. Second, still with taht "pay cut", Torre was STILL going to be the highest paid manager in baseball eventough he has not taken the Yankees to the WS for the past 7 years. I think Steinbrenner is right, FINALLY.

vega, any manager that take a incentive laden contract like that would have burned up pitchers just to reach those goal. You sometime make me wonder what the hell your thinking. Now Living in NY I hate the Yankees and Torre for we're mighty than thou attitude. But still that was a BS contract.

5 million contract BS contract? ??// Tell me IF there is another manager with that kind of contract. Only 1. Yes, one manager with a 5 million contract. Now, if it was 2.5 million, meaning, now you are NOT the highest paid manager, that is another question, but STILL be the HIGHEST paid manager in BASEBALL and you call that a BS contract? ?/ And then you have incentive over the 5 million? ??/// Wow. And 1 million is a GIVEN, getting to the playoffs. That is an easy one, so is at least 6 million dollar contract. Sorry, but i don't see the BS contract, sorry.

that was a 30 percent pay cut telling me they really don't want me, but to save face I will still offer more than any other manager. They wanted him to turn it down, hence the Incentives, and only one year no security and the Yankees get off to a slow start and the quibbling will start on the first two game losing. NO that is bull crap contract to make him quit.
