The Yankee mouthpiece strikes again!!!!
Never pass up a chance to berate the Astros.
Way to go Vega.
Of course we would want a the best 3B we could get but neither is coming here so why even bring it up, except to dog the Astros again.

I would like those 2 as well Hembo and I think if there was an opportunity to get them, Drayton would try. However, I would not want to blow every dollar of money we have to spend on one player.
Drayton has always spent money on this team, He has NEVER spent money like the Yankees or Boston, nor should he. I think he has not always signed the right guys and maybe needs to let the baseball people make more decisions.
But all and all, he has been the best owner this franchise has ever had. Has he made mistakes, sure. Everybody does from time to time. Do I agree with every decision, absolutely not.
I just feel like the reins will be loosed a bit and we will get a nice upgrade of talent in a few areas. IF we solidify the rotation with a solid guy and have some of the young guys start contributing, we could make some noise next year

I agree with Dennis as well. The only sticking point I see is: Will Draytie LET baseball people make the decisions or will he keep putting his grubby little paws in the mix? I just don't think he knows how to stay out of the personnel decisions.

Yup. That's been the main problem. Non-baseball guys have been allowed into the baseball decision-making process. Under Hunsicker, they didn't.

Let's clarify something, Dennis. Drayton has spent money on this team......at times. There have been times he has sat on his ass and refused to spend enough to give the Astros a chance. That's why he saw to it that Billy Wagner was traded because Billy told the truth about Drayton refusing to spend money on the starting pitcher they needed at the trading deadline or before the rosters had to be set. We failed to make the playoffs by ONE game and Drayton didn't do squat to help the team when they needed it. Then, when Wagner called him on it, he was traded. Where are those great pitchers we got for Wagner? You, know.....Brandon Duckworth, Buchholz, and Zeke Astacio? Making that move out of spite has really paid off, hasn't it? Then, I also remember that he dumped Mike Hampton rather than pay him.....same for Carl Everett. Yeah, he shelled out big bucks for Carlos Lee. BUT, he also let Jeff Kent walk so Biggio could move back to second base.......wasn't that a hell of a move? It was made to keep Draytie's boy happy. Biggio knew he couldn't keep playing regularly in left field because he lacked the range to cover the ground. He let Andy Pettitte walk and allowed Purpura to deal Taveras and two young pitchers for a bum like Jason Jennings.
I agree that Drayton needs to allow the baseball people to do their jobs and keep out of things he knows nothing about.

The team's payroll has, for the most part, been consistently rising and in line with what the payroll of a mid market team would be expected to be. Over the last 3-4 years Houston's been among the top 5-8 teams in all of payroll.
Did he refuse to spend it or was there simply nothing available that was worth trading for? Do you know for a fact that there were trades to be made that he vetoed for money reasons?
He traded Hampton because Hampton made it clear he was going to FA and had $$$ in his eyes. Teams can't keep every player they have, and if you have one that you know you're going to lose - trading him is the smartest thing. Plus, the trade allowed Houston to get rid of overpriced Derek Bell. The Carl Everett 'dump' allowed us to get Adam Everett from Boston.
A 'bum' that, before he was hurt, was pitching quite well and was entering what should have been the prime of his career.

JB, said it better than I ever could.
I realize that you have it in for Drayton and wish he would sell the team but every team spends as the income comes in. The Yankees and Boston spend like they do because they reap big profits from the team. The Astros don't have their own broadcast station and do not reap the benefits from sellings ads for that broadcast.
No matter who owned this team, no one would spend like crazy as you would imply that is needed for success.
Some deals worked and some don't
I would not have made the Jennings deal but after Pettitte and Clemens left, Timmy P felt pressure to make a move. I feel it was the wrong move and it cost him his job.
You can't keep everyone and in some cases we kept the wrong players over the right one (Abreu vs Hidalgo). I am as upset as anyone but its not always the owners fault.
Facts are facts, Drayton has SPENT money on this team, maybe he was a deal away from getting us over the hump but he has made that leap once or twice (Randy Johnson, anyone?).
I think Wade is a smart and capable GM that can convince Drayton to let him make the moves needed. Gerry the Hun was able to and I think Wade will too. Remember that Wade has Tal Smith's ear as well so that will hold much water with Drayton.
Let's see how this plays out before we label next season a failure.
