I agree with you, Ken. Matsui is a solid pickup and an obvious upgrade from Burke. We are not done yet and I am sure we will be using many young pitchers in spring training and giving them their chance as well. Its true our starting rotation is bleak but with the younger guys stepping up, Backe returning from injury to be solid, and some possible vet help like Wolf or Lieber (at least they are not as old as woody). The outlook gets even better. We have strengthened our D up the middle , which will help make what pitchers we have to be even better and now are looking to find vet help in the rotation. I say we are most definitively heading in the right direction. Vega, I would not say we are horrible, but we most assuredly need more help in the ares you mentioned.

Yep, we may need an arm or two, but I'm starting to get pumped about next season.

This is getting to be TMI, I don't need to know that Coach is pumping Ken. Ken, please for our sake, keep your pumping to yourself. ;D

This addition is a very interesting one defensively for the Astros. Matsui's range factor would indicate that he will get to one more ball per game than Biggio did. Combine that with the fact that he will turn more dps than Biggio did and will make less errors and you have the pitchers smiling.
Speed is added on the offensive end and he had almost the same # of total bases as Biggio on an adjusted basis while getting to the plate 100 times less.

Woody needs to be released....he is dead weight. Don't waste time on old injured pitchers liek Leiber. We need a quality starter and Wolf, Leiber, or Woody don't solve the problem.

Yeah, it's a bad idea to have around a veteran pitcher that is, by ALL accounts, great in the dugout with the young pitchers, especially one that pitched well in the majority of his starts.
On the mound, Woody is what we expected him to be - a #5 starter.
So who do you propose we get instead?

I don't remember seeing anyone worth the money they are asking for, available right now.
Seems to me that Wolf or Lieber is a low risk high reward type of gamble.
I think we will see the team rely more on the younger arms and less on outside help. As was said already, the added defense will drop the ERA somewhat and create a better chance of winning. The offensive lineup seems to be solid.
However, I think another trade is coming, but I am not sure for whom. No need to break the bank on a FA that is overpriced.

Woody got bombed more times last year than Speedy did.

Agreed on Woody. I think we got a deal on Matsui though. Filled the hole at 2b for a few years anyway if he stays healthy.

Purpura decided to give a 2 year deal to Woody and would not make a 2 year deal for Pettitte, thank you very much.
Now we pay 16.5 million dollars to a guy that has big numbers because he played at coors.
Lets see if he can give us SAME numbers at MMP.
If he does, great deal, if he does not (coors numbers) then we got screwed.

Unless he gets another quality starting pitcher and a closer, we're still screwed.

Woody was a huge disappointment, he was nothing like the Astros expected him to be. Woody got bombed more times last year than Speedy did. Do you think they were expecting an ace out of him? They knew going into the season what he was going to bring to the team. He wasn't great, but in more than half his starts he went at least 6 innings and allowed 3 er or less. A 5th starter who does that while pitching 188 innings is not hurting the team.

I will stick by my guns and say that Wade has a two year plan to get us back up to speed. In my humble opinion it is his position that we have all the starters that we are going to have come Spring.
You have
Oswalt Rodriguez Backe
and then see who steps up from Patton Nieve Albers Sampson Guitterez Paulino
and then if only one steps up use old man Woody.
If you think about this from a long term perspective we have to find out what these guys got. If they have squat then we go out and get some guys next year and spend our asses off.
I feel pretty good about the off season so far, defense improved, bullpen improved, better diversification in the line up, and most importantly a stance that you perform or get the hell out. I will wager that we will not have situations where Ensberg, Lane, et all get chance after chance to make it good.
