Calm down, Vega. I wasn't making a racial remark and I don't think AB was in this case. You are way too touchy when anything involviing race is mentioned. We have a LOT of great Latin ballplayers and I know you defend Burke and he is white. I simply don't understand why you think Vlad is much better than Berkman....overall. Let's wait awhile before making that decision. Pujols is definitely better than Berkman right now......Vlad, I don't think so.

HUH? Hembo? No he isnt a lifetime .325 hitter, he is a lifetime .301 hitter. You know what the difference between .325 and .301 is?? Not much. Look at all the stats. Not just BA. I will bet you Vlad doesnt have a lifetime OBP of over .400 and that Berkman has a higher lifetime OPS. Berkman has 173 more walks in 8 years than Vlad has walks in 13 years. You dont think that counts for something? 173 more. Thats a ton more than .24 points in BA. See how that works?

.325 and .300 is a big difference.
Like i said, all .325 hitters that played regular ball are all in the hall of fame.

are they? i really dont know...i certainly believe it though...although its been thrown out a million times and debated endless hours i find batting average to be one of the most important and telling aspects of a baseball player a guy who hits .300 every single year is a hell of a player...no its not the only stat and i admit that but its still quite an achievement
its like era for a pitcher...I hold to this day that is by far and away the most important stat for a pitcher(starter anyways) Its absolutely everything.. for someone to even try and deny it is silly as hell..its everything...
you take a pitcher who is 20-3 with a 5.00 era and a guy who is 3- 20 with a 2.15 era the second guy is a much better pitcher..Its clear cut...The difference is one probably plays for Kc(3-20) and the other for the yankees or mets...That whip is bullsh*t...but then again if you dominate in ERA you probably have a great whip anyways...Tell me this isnt true? who cares if a guy is 18-0 if his era is 5.00? wow!

.. and Lance Berkman has a career average of .301. What did you say about that>?
I agree with you hembo. The 2nd pitcher is much better.

and as usual we see stats that benefit ones argument...the fact berkman cant get to ground balls because he is a fat lazy bastard stat seems to be missing?

HUH?
He isnt fat. But what does his fielding ability have to do with him hitting .301?

this thread is great...I finally had a chance to read all the way through it...my observations:
I know that the difference between hitting 300 and hitting 350 is one dink hit every TWO weeks...one hit just to the left or right of the fielder that manages to dribble through, or falls just out of reach of the fielder for a hit rather than an out...thats it(based on 450 at bats)
I always thought bagwell got a bad rap for his performance in the playoffs....he never got a pitch within a foot of the strike zone...he just walked and walked...then, frustration would set in and he would swing at those way away pitches
We have gone from Vlad, Arod, berkman to helton and burk...I submit that Eddy godat had a 1.000 OBP...maybe we should go after him
Of course this post is totally off the topic, but give me a break...I had trouble figureing out what the topic was....I love this board
poor Coach....but after all, someone said that an infinite number of monkeys with an infinite amount of time on typwritters would eventually write all the great books....someone would have to monitor that, and this is about what it would look like.

Thanks chandler and ab..although i dont think people ever really disputed the era thing...i think theres a monster difference between .300 and a guy who hits .325 every year while also putting up 30 hr's 100 rbis and 100 runs...the same guy who is also near the top of the pack in obp and ops, slugging stolen bases etc....I truly think berkman is a one trick pony...
